Italy has been re-elected to Category A of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium. The election took place yesterday in London during the 34th General Assembly of the Organization, a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to promoting maritime cooperation and ensuring the safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment.
Category A of the Executive Council includes States that, due to the significance of their merchant fleets, contribute most to the development of global maritime transport.
Italy, a continuous member of the Council since the IMO’s establishment, was the most voted country alongside China. This result confirms the recognition of Italy’s significant contribution to the development and safety of global maritime transport.
The elected countries are: Italy, China, Japan, Greece, Liberia, Norway, Panama, United Kingdom, Republic of Korea, and United States.
