On November 12, Italy gathers to honor the memory of the fallen in Nassiriya and all international peacekeeping missions.
Twenty-two years ago, a terrorist attack struck the Maestrale base, killing 28 people, including 19 Italians—military personnel, carabinieri, and civilians. A sacrifice etched into the national conscience, bearing witness to the courage of those who served the country to the very end. On this occasion, President Sergio Mattarella recalled: “To those who gave their lives for the common good, the Republic owes its gratitude.”
The Head of State emphasized that Italy, faithful to its tradition of dialogue and cooperation, will continue to contribute with determination to international missions, deploying both military and civilian personnel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its closeness to the families of the victims, reminding us that their pain is shared by the entire national community. In Nassiriya, as in every theater of conflict, the sacrifice of those who served with honor remains a beacon of memory and values.
