In his address today to the Chamber of Deputies in response to a parliamentary question, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also updated on the actions taken by the Italian Government to tackle the humanitarian situation caused by the civil war in Sudan.

According to Tajani, “Italy is at the forefront of humanitarian assistance, supporting the most vulnerable civilians, starting with children. For the crisis in Sudan we have allocated over 125 million euros for interventions to support basic services and Sudanese communities in neighboring countries.”

The Government has decided to concentrate its humanitarian commitment in an initiative called “Italy for Sudan” to face the crisis. The initiative foresees an initial humanitarian flight organized by our Cooperation, together with the forces of the Sistema Italia. “We will soon deliver tons of food aid to more than 2,500 children, through the parish of the Sacred Heart of Father Pious Anyaja in Port Sudan, the Comboni Fathers and the Sisters of Mother Teresa,” specified the Minister.

The Government also intends to organize a mission by ship to bring further aid to Port Sudan, to provide immediate assistance to 26,000 refugees currently in the city.

According to Tajani, “the clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to cause very serious human rights violations and a deep humanitarian crisis throughout the country.” According to the latest estimates, more than 12 million Sudanese have been forced to leave their homes.
