On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day — commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of 1948 — the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, reaffirmed that the promotion and protection of fundamental rights remain an essential pillar of Italy’s international engagement.
This year, the celebration takes on special significance thanks to Italy’s recent election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term. This achievement represents a tangible recognition of Italy’s role in defending the dignity of every individual and of the dialogue and mediation capacity that defines Italian diplomacy.
Minister Tajani emphasized that the mandate within the Council will give new momentum to Italy’s traditional priorities: the universal abolition of the death penalty, the promotion of gender equality, the protection of children’s rights and those of the most vulnerable, the defense of freedom of expression and religion, and the fight against all forms of discrimination.
On all these fronts, the Farnesina will continue to work with determination alongside international partners to ensure that human dignity and fundamental rights are fully upheld — for everyone, everywhere in the world.
