The second edition of the General Assembly of the Space Economy kicks off today at the Farnesina, an event that brings together institutional actors as well as industrial and entrepreneurial stakeholders from the space and defense sector. The opening session, dedicated to the theme “Space Diplomacy: a tool of foreign policy and a driver of growth,” will be opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani.
The 2025 edition of the event, following last September’s edition which saw the participation of over 240 speakers, takes place at a particularly significant moment for the sector, after the recent adoption of the first Italian space law and while work is underway at the European level on an EU Space Act.
Furthermore, the General Assembly precedes by a short time the ministerial meeting of the European Space Agency which in November – under the Italian Presidency – will define Europe’s ambitions for the next three years, in a context of profound changes in the space industry and challenges linked to the growing connections between space and defense.
Our country is also very active on this issue at the international and multilateral level, and Italy will play a leading role at the United Nations with the Presidency, in the 2026-2027 biennium, of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), the only global forum for the definition of common rules.
At the event hosted at the Farnesina, alongside Minister Tajani, will also speak the President of the Parliamentary Intergroup on Space Economy, Andrea Mascaretti, the Vice President of the European Parliament, Antonella Sberna, and the Vice President and Regional Minister for Economic Development of Lazio, Roberta Angelilli.
The proceedings will then continue with a discussion on cooperation in space and aerospace matters, focusing on the objectives of space diplomacy and our country’s international partnerships.
The round table will be moderated by the Military Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of COMINT (Interministerial Committee for Space Policies), Gen. Franco Federici, and by the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Space, Marco Lisi.
The program dedicated to the Space Economy will continue until the 31st and will take place not only in Rome but also in Turin and Milan, bringing together institutions, the financial sector, representatives of major Italian industries, universities, and research in three events dedicated to the challenges of diplomacy, technological innovation, and sustainability.
