Italian personal tax code

The personal tax code is the alphanumeric code issued by the Revenue Agency to identify the citizen (Italian or foreign) in relations with public administrations, private individuals and Italian entities.

It can be requested abroad, both by Italians and foreigners, through the Consular Office. To request the personal tax code at the Consular Office, it is necessary to submit a motivated request via e-mail to: consolare.abuja@esteri.it attaching:

  1. Residence certificate duly translated into Italian.
  2. Tax Code request form completed in all parts and signed.
  3. A copy of the identity document

Married women, even if they take their husband’s surname, must always indicate their maiden surname instead.

The request for the tax code can also be submitted through a special power of attorney, by which a third party is delegated to submit the tax code request form on their behalf.

The assignment of the tax code is immediate and takes place through a specific online connection with the Fisconline service of the Revenue Agency. The card will subsequently be sent by the latter.

For further information, it is recommended to consult the Mini Guide to the tax code for foreigners of the Revenue Agency.

Study reasons

Foreign citizens arriving in Italy for study purposes and staying less than 90 days may request the tax code at any office of the Revenue Agency.

Foreign citizens arriving in Italy for study purposes and staying more than 90 days must first apply for a residence permit at the Police Headquarters and, at that stage, will receive the tax code.
