With the inscription of the system of condominium theatres of central Italy in the UNESCO World Heritage List, decided by the World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan, Korea, Italy consolidates its global primacy with 62 sites inscribed in the World Heritage List.
“This choice confirms the universal value of our extraordinary cultural heritage. Italy is a true cultural superpower: culture represents one of the most precious resources of our identity, one of the most effective tools of our diplomacy, and a fundamental pillar of the country’s international projection.”
The recognition rewards a unique architectural, cultural, and civic model, developed between the 18th and 19th centuries in the towns of central Italy, where shared ownership and management of theatres fostered, for over two centuries, the dissemination of culture and live performance, contributing to the cohesion of local communities.
The candidacy was promoted by the Marche Region, with the technical-scientific coordination of the Ministry of Culture and the participation of the Regions of Umbria and Emilia-Romagna. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, within the framework of the priority of cultural diplomacy supported by Minister Tajani, backed the candidacy process by managing relations with UNESCO and accompanying it through all the competent venues.
